March 1 (Reuters) – Three-time Grammy-nominated American recording artist Angie Stone died at age 63 early Saturday, a representative confirmed.

Deborah R. Champagne, the representative of Stone who spoke last with her around 9 p.m. ET (0200 GMT), stated that Stone died in a car crash in Montgomery, Alabama, following a show.

Guy Todd Williams, better known as Rahiem of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the first rap act to be inducted into the Rock Hall, said nine other people were on a van with Stone when she was hit. He said she was the only fatality.

Stone was traveling in a Sprinter van with nine other individuals bound for Atlanta, Georgia, when the crash occurred; she was the only fatality.

Angie Stone, the award-nominated R&B singer behind classics like “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” sadly passed away at 63. The crash occurred early Saturday morning following a concert in Montgomery, Alabama, when she was riding as a passenger in a van that crashed. Stone was riding with nine others in the van; she alone died.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone rose to prominence in the late 1970s as a member of The Sequence, one of the earliest female hip-hop groups. Their hit single “Funk You Up” in 1979 was celebrated as one of the earliest rap songs sung by women.

Turning to a solo career in the 1990s, her debut album “Black Diamond” (1999) became Gold, featuring the hit single “No More Rain (In This Cloud).” Her 2001 album “Mahogany Soul” featured the hit single “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” which solidified her position in the neo-soul genre.

Her two children outlive stone: daughter Diamond Stone, 41, from her marriage to Rodney Stone, and son Michael Archer, 27, whom she had with fellow artist D’Angelo.
